There are some additional methods and devices for the person who wants to do his or her hair removal at home. Some are electric, some are old and some are new but they all are being used all around the world. Some have fascinating stories as to how they were used; after all, necessity is the mother of invention and sometimes, the tried and tested ways work the best!

Waxing/Sugaring – These are from an ancient method, among the few temporary methods still commonly performed professionally. A heated wax or sticky paste-like substance is applied to the skin, and a strip of cloth or paper is pressed onto the adhesive matter. The cloth or paper piece is quickly pulled away, taking hairs with it. This can be done at home, but can be painful and messy; the proper consistency of the sticky removal material is difficult to achieve. Also, the hairs can break off at or below surface.

TweezIng - Metal tweezers (forceps) are used to pull hairs out by the root, one or more at once. This can be very useful for eyebrows or stray facial hairs but can be quite painful, difficult for large areas, and may cause ingrown hairs. A variation on this is Electric Tweezers in which electric current is applied to a hair through an electrified tweezer. This is supposed to eliminate the hair by grasping the hair above the skin's surface and holding it anywhere from 15 seconds to several minutes while electricity travels down the hair and supposedly permanently damages the hair root. However there’s no published clinical proof of claims that this method will achieve permanent hair removal.

Threading - Called khite or fatlah in the Near and Middle East, it's less common method in the West and is done by a practitioner who, holding one end of the cotton thread their teeth and the other in the left hand, loops the middle through the index and middle fingers of the right hand. They then use the loop to trap the unwanted hairs and pull them out. Sometimes they’ll use devices to hold the thread during the procedure.

Hair Removal Mitt - An abrasive surface is used to buff away hair on the skin's surface. The device or mitt usually has rough strips or a smoothing surface its face. This is an old method and was popular during World War II when metal for razors was rationed. Often a fine grit sandpaper obtained from the factories was used by ingenious wartime ladies to scour the hair from their nylon-less legs. Anything for beauty!

Rotary Epilator – Much like an electric razor, except rather than a cutting blade moving in a rotating manner, they have a mechanical tweezer-like arrangement, which pulls hairs out by their roots. These can work well for legs and arms and hair removal may last from several days to several weeks. However, it can be hard to use on the backs of the legs, is uncomfortable, especially on the more sensitive areas, and the hair must be long enough for the epilator to grasp.
